Abstract: Human infants show a dramatic transition in early language development from an initial universal pattern of perception to one that is language-specific. During this time, human social interaction during exposure to language is critical to learning. Newly obtained resting state brain measures indicate that the propagation of electrical signals in the language network reverse direction at this exact same time in development. I’ll describe this inflection point in the brain’s developing language network and explore its impact and origins.
